Sen. Ted Cruz said Tuesday the recent debate over his citizenship and eligibility for president is just the “silly season of politics.”

Speaking to CNN’s Candy Crowley for next Sunday’s “State of the Union,” the Texas Republican said he’s an American citizen and whether he’s eligible to run for president should be left to the experts.

“If you don’t have anything to hide, there’s no big deal,” Cruz said.

Cruz said that his mother explained to him as a child that he could choose to claim Canadian citizenship, which he said he never did.

“And when I was a kid, my mom always told me that if I wanted to, I could affirmatively choose to claim Canadian citizenship. But I got a U.S. passport when I was in high school, I never did anything to claim citizenship, and I thought that was the end of the matter,” Cruz said.

Instead, Cruz announced yesterday he will formally renounce his Canadian citizenship, because “serving as a U.S. senator, I think it’s appropriate I be only an American.”

Cruz spoke to Crowley from Houston where he’s in the middle of a tour to push defunding the Affordable Care Act. While speaking at the town hall-style meeting, Cruz said Republicans who don’t support defunding Obamacare should “not blink,” NBC reports.

“A significant amount of Republicans assume, with an impasse, that President Obama will never ever ever give up his principles, so Republicans have to give up theirs,” Cruz said. “If you have an impasse, you know — one side or the other has to blink. How do we win this fight? Don’t blink.”

Cruz downplayed the effects of a potential government shutdown over Obamacare, saying that the last time the government experienced “a temporary suspension of non-essential federal government spending,” the military kept functioning and Social Security checks were distributed.
